## Google's John Mueller Says Blocking A Popup's Script Or Domain In robots.txt Generally Works

Status: Confirmed | Topics: crawling-indexing-rendering

Replying on Reddit's r/TechSEO about an age-verification popup, Google's John Mueller said blocking it through robots.txt would generally work. He named two routes. The popup's own domain can disallow crawling, so Googlebot skips those URLs while rendering. Or the site can disallow the one script file that loads it, which he advised against if that file does many other jobs. Pages must still load without those resources.

In plain terms: Robots.txt is a file telling crawlers which URLs not to fetch, so if the popup's code sits at a blocked address, Googlebot never loads it and never sees the popup covering the page.

Why it matters: A popup that hides content from Googlebot can be handled in robots.txt, but disallowing a shared JavaScript file can break rendering for everything else that file does.

Our take: The safe reading is narrow: this fits a self-contained script that only draws a popup. Any file that also carries navigation, content or product data is the wrong thing to disallow, and a rendering test should confirm it first.

## Google AI Mode Flight Answers Link Only To Google Flights In Search Engine Roundtable Tests

Status: Observed | Topics: ai-overviews-ai-mode

Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 3 that when Barry Schwartz asked AI Mode about flights over the weekend, every response linked only to Google Flights. He says this held across several domestic and international destinations, with dozens of examples saved. Natzir first flagged the pattern on X on October 30. Google has made no statement, so this is an observation and not a confirmed policy.

In plain terms: AI Mode writes a conversational answer with a few source links, and in these tests every link in a flight answer pointed to Google's own flight search, not to any airline or booking site.

Why it matters: If travel answers in AI Mode send every click to Google's own product, airlines and booking sites lose a referral path that classic results still gave them.

Our take: Treat it as a pattern to track across other verticals before reading it as policy. If it holds for hotels and products too, source links in AI Mode start to look like a Google-owned shelf, and visibility there turns on whether Google runs a competing product.

## Google Moves AI Overviews For Many Brand Queries To The Right-Hand Column On Desktop

Status: Observed | Topics: ai-overviews-ai-mode

Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 2 that Google is showing AI Overviews for many brand searches in a right-hand column on desktop, where a Knowledge Panel would usually sit. Chris Long and David McSweeney flagged it on X, and the article shows examples for Apple, Zillow and Coke. Google has not confirmed the change or how widely it applies.

In plain terms: When someone searches a company name, the AI-written summary now appears in the side column on a desktop screen instead of in the middle of the results list.

Why it matters: Brand queries are where a company controls the most of its own result, so a different AI Overview position changes how much of the page your owned listings still occupy.

Our take: Brand-search click and impression reports are worth checking for a shift this week, since a side-column summary is read and clicked differently from one in the main list. Whether this stays a test or spreads is the open question.
