The system described has a specific trigger condition. It calculates a “landing page score” for a brand’s existing page. What does the funnel-tile framing reveal about value capture?
The phrase “a new layer in the economics of search,” attributed to ecommerce consultant Greg Zakowicz in coverage by Practical Ecommerce2, is analyst interpretation rather than a Google statement. But the framing earns its keep. The patent describes a system inserted at the point where a click has already been earned but has not yet converted. That is the post-click layer: traffic you paid for, or traffic that ranked organically and clicked through, arriving at a destination Google controls rather than one you built.
My read, and I label it as one, is that the landing page score functions as a gatekeeping mechanism with revenue implications on both sides. For Google, an AI-generated page that converts at a higher rate than a poor-quality brand page produces better advertiser outcomes that justify continued spend, which is a legitimate product goal. For the brand, the implication is different: if the threshold gates access to your own traffic, the landing page score becomes a compliance metric with real stakes, not a diagnostic suggestion.
The patent’s navigation link language is worth taking seriously in its own terms. The document states the link “can be included in a sponsored content item.” That word “can” is doing work. It leaves open whether the system operates in paid search only, in organic results as well, or in some hybrid surface. The patent’s scope language elsewhere limits the described system to transactional and commerce pages, which narrows the practical exposure, but does not fully resolve the question of where in the results page the link appears.
What is the patent not saying that coverage sometimes claims?

The patent describes one way to assemble them. Practitioners who assume the post-click environment is their unconditional property are reading the landscape as it existed five years ago, not as it is being engineered today.
