Google brings developing-topic link carousels to AI Mode
Robby Stein, Google Search's VP of Product, announced on X on August 25, 2026 that developing-topic link carousels are now live in AI Mode, matching a format already available in AI Overviews since a May 2026 rollout. For searches about a trending topic, Google can show a horizontal row of article cards, each with an image, headline, source and date, and the carousel can highlight a user's Preferred Sources. Google says the carousel appears for only some developing-topic searches.
In plain termsAI Mode is Google's full-page, chat-style search experience, kept separate from the AI Overview summary box that appears above normal search results; a carousel here is simply a horizontal strip of clickable article cards sitting inside that chat answer, giving a featured article a bigger, more visible link than the small citation numbers Google normally attaches to AI-written text.
Why it mattersThe carousel gives featured articles a larger, more visible link placement inside AI Mode than inline citations get, which can mean more clicks for publishers whose content appears there, especially through Preferred Sources status.
Our takeI argued in Google's billions-of-clicks claim that Google's public messaging about AI Search sending traffic to the open web runs well ahead of any checkable methodology, three executives repeating a stable-clicks figure with no published baseline. Stein's framing here, connecting people 'with original coverage and a range of perspectives,' is the same pitch in miniature: a bigger, more visible link placement is a real, checkable product change, but whether it moves the actual click math stays exactly as unverifiable as before.
