UCP ships its fourth spec release with breaking schema changes and grocery support

The Universal Commerce Protocol, the agentic-checkout spec governed by Google, Shopify, and Stripe, published its fourth release on August 25, 2026. The update restructures fulfillment schemas, moves buyer consent from fixed boolean fields to a reverse-DNS-keyed map, and consolidates signing keys into a single JWK Set. It also adds store-location lookup and fractional-quantity ordering by weight for grocery agents.

In plain termsUCP is the technical rulebook that lets different companies' shopping agents, from Google, Shopify, Stripe and others, talk to a merchant's checkout the same way; this release changes some of that rulebook's data formats, so integrations built against the old formats stop working until updated.

Why it mattersMerchants integrating UCP-based agentic checkout must update fulfillment and consent payloads before the next agent order request breaks against the old schema.

Our takeI wrote in 'OpenAI's feed pivot' that ACP, the protocol behind ChatGPT's organic and ads product feeds, was co-developed with Stripe. Stripe also sits on UCP's Governing Council alongside Google and Shopify, having joined in April 2026, so a merchant building for agentic checkout is watching two Stripe-linked specs evolve on separate release schedules, not one converging standard.
