YouTube Brings Ask YouTube To Shorts And Live Streams
YouTube said on October 12, 2026 that its conversational search tool, Ask YouTube, will soon work directly from the watch page while viewers are watching Shorts and live streams, surfacing context on what's happening without leaving the player. Search Engine Journal separately reported, citing a YouTube Creator Insider video, that a stricter related test puts a sparkle-icon version of Ask YouTube inside the Shorts player itself, limited to English-speaking viewers 18 and older.
In plain termsAsk YouTube is a chat box built into YouTube that answers questions about a video instead of just returning a list of links, and this update lets viewers pull it up while mid-scroll through Shorts or watching a live stream, not only on a regular video page.
Why it mattersConversational search moving into YouTube's highest-volume format puts another AI layer between a viewer and the creator's own description or pinned comment, the same disintermediation risk playing out across search.
Our takeA sparkle icon inside the Shorts feed is YouTube training viewers to ask the platform directly rather than read a caption or pinned comment, the same pattern AI Overviews already set for web search. Watch whether the answers lean on a video's own metadata or on what YouTube's model infers from the frames, since that decides whether a creator's own description still does any work.

Google Tests Prescription Drug Ads Inside AI Mode And AI Overviews
Google confirmed to Adweek that it is testing standard text and Shopping ads for pharmaceutical products, including prescription drugs, inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, limited to the United States. A Google spokesperson said the ads run as standard text and Shopping ads labeled 'Sponsored,' and Storyboard18 reported the initial test phase is limited to Performance Max, AI Max, Shopping, and broad-match campaign types, excluding creatives that use pinning or text disclaimers.
In plain termsAI Mode and AI Overviews are the chat-style and summary answers Google shows instead of, or above, a normal list of blue links, and this test puts paid ads for drugs inside those answers for the first time, not just on the regular results page.
Why it mattersPharma and telehealth advertisers now have a path into Google's AI answer surfaces, which is the clearest sign yet that the sensitive-vertical wall around AI Mode and AI Overviews ads is starting to open category by category.
Our takeGoogle has kept healthcare out of AI Overviews ad inventory as a blanket sensitive-vertical rule, so a carved-out pharma exception reads as the first crack in that wall rather than a one-off. Any other sensitive vertical, finance or gambling among them, should expect the same category-by-category opening if this test helps Google's ad revenue.

Google Business Profiles Add Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Halal And Kosher Menu Tags
A Google employee announced on LinkedIn that Google Business Profile menus now support gluten-free, dairy-free, halal, and kosher dietary tags for restaurants, alongside the existing vegetarian and vegan options. Restaurant owners add them by editing a menu item in their Business Profile and checking the applicable badge. The announcement says the tagged dishes surface when a diner searches Google Maps or Search by a specific restriction, the way a vegan filter already does.
In plain termsA Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows a business's hours, menu, and reviews on Google Maps and in Search, and this update lets a restaurant mark individual dishes so they show up when someone searches by diet instead of just by cuisine or name.
Why it mattersA diner's dietary filter now has a direct hook into a restaurant's own listing, so a profile left with an unedited or stale menu loses a specific-intent search it would otherwise win on badges alone.
Our takeGoogle shipping intent-specific badges onto an existing local listing, rather than a new ranking factor, is the cheaper lever it keeps reaching for in local search. It asks the business to self-tag, then rewards the ones that bother, so restaurants slow to update menus lose a now-searchable attribute to competitors who tag within the week.
